A psychiatric assessment is a way of gathering information about a person with the aim of making a diagnosis. It is usually carried out by a trained psychiatrist and includes a general medical and psychiatric history, along with a mental state examination. Following on from the assessment your psychiatrist will then propose a plan to treat and manage the difficulties you are experiencing. This often includes the prescribing of medication and making other recommendations including particular forms of therapy that might be beneficial to you. Psychiatrists are well trained professionals who are sensitive to personal difficulties. They are aware that such assessments can be extremely anxiety-provoking, and are skilled at putting people at ease.
